Using the data we got from our sorter quiz a few weeks ago, we finished our new VN recommendation site!! Thank you to everyone who voted on that sorter quiz~

With the level of VN knowledge here on vndb's forums, anyone reading this is unlikely to find it terribly useful as it's geared more towards newbies, like a Fisher Price version of VNDB, but you might find some of the voting results on the newbie sorting and related VNs to be of interest.

10/10 i set boy's love to hate and immediately get Sweet Pool.

Speaking seriously though, it's a nice tool as always. That said: some issues with tags:

- Isn't marking Umineko as LGBT a bit of a spoiler?
- Mahou Shoujo should have a gameplay tag.
- I know that Sakuuta has a lesbian character in it, but is it really enough to call it Girl's Love?
- Tokimeki Memorial should have a gameplay tag.
- Higurashi is hardly sci-fi.
- One ~Kagayaku Kisetsu e~ should have a romance tag.
- Duel Savior should have a gameplay tag.
- Eroge! has one or two yaoi scenes in it.

Edit: This is a bit of a pedantic complaint, but the site seems to have Baldr Sky Dive 1 without Baldr Sky Dive 2. Were there just not enough people that had played 2 in comparison to 1?Last modified on 2018-06-27 at 23:31

We didn't include any sequels in there. As for Eroge!, we deliberately didn't include the boys' love genre for it because a) the character in question doesn't even have a proper route b) anyone who's looking for actual BL VNs won't want it in their recommendations c) it's seriously questionable, how much you could apply a "yaoi" tag for it

For Sweet Pool, the site work with multiple tags. Yes, it is BL, but it's also a good horror VN that I think can be properly enjoyed by a horror fan if you skip every single h-scene.

For Umineko, we didn't really state which character is it, so no spoiler problem. Umineko's cast is huge.

And for Eroge, complementing what Palas said, despite VNDB erroneous description of the tag, BL is a genre and "yaoi" is NOT a synonym for "it have a man with man sex scene". That what it was considered for the recommendation site. And Eroge doesn't qualify by any means as a BL game, so it's correctly out.

We'll look into those gameplay tags missing, so thanks for reporting it!Last modified on 2018-06-28 at 03:09

The reason I pointed out the Boys Love tag for Eroge is because there seemed to be several titles that were marked Girls Love despite only having one or two scenes that could be broadly classified as yuri.

The Sweet Pool thing was a joke. I actually like Chiral's VNs despite their being BL, I just found it funny that a yaoi game one of the first things to pop up when I specifically said that I didn't want any.

yeah, I knew you were joking but I wanted to clarify how the site works just in case someone else says the same but seriously ww

and could you point out what VNs have the GL tag, but only have one or two scenes, like SakuUta? We extracted the data directly off VNDB, and by the tagging alone we couldn't verify how many yuri scenes have in the game.

We launched the site today, so it does have some tiny errors here and there, any feedback so we can correct them is appreciated!

EDIT: the gameplay page is updated.Last modified on 2018-06-28 at 04:04

Eiyuu Senki, Bible Black, Koihime Musou, Daibanchou, Funbag Fantasy, and Boob Wars stand out. I haven't played most of them, but I know that the amount of yuri content pales in comparison to the amount of hetero content, and I certainly wouldn't recommend them to anyone looking for a GL game, especially considering the...special attitude certain members of the yuri community have towards these things.

Thanks for the feedback kominarachromer. Some of the genre tags are a bit wonky as they were initially based on VNDB tags (anything with the yuri tag got labeled Girls Love). We've been manually editing those genre labels but with 363 VNs on there, there's a lot of little errors that slipped through. I'll get those corrected thanks, and if you spot any other errors, please let us know~

Edit: Regarding Umineko: that's a tricky question. It can seem a spoiler in hindsight, once you know about Yasu, but for who are just starting, I don't think it necessarily means much. Like the LGBT+ tag could equally have applied to Lion and Will in ep8, or the love twins in ep6. Newbies might just assume there's a new character that appears later, rather than think it's an existing character.Last modified on 2018-06-28 at 07:21

I can't find a game by this title from VNDB.

@9 lol what on earth. Did it really show [email protected]? That's Cocoro@Function (link). It seems to be showing ok for me, so do you perhaps have some kind of browser plugin that filters out emails?

NoScript, that is all.

<div class="fullVNTitle"><a href="/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection" class="__cf_email__" data-cfemail="f8bb979b978a97b8be8d969b8c919796">[email&#160;protected]</a>!</div>

@11 I'm pretty sure it's not a server side action as it certainly isn't adding an email class to it. It's either an ISP or browser issue. Either way, I changed the @ to the unicode @ so hopefully it should stop triggering for you and work properly now.

I'm pretty sure it _is_ a server side action.

Do you perhaps have some kind of website plugin that filters out emails?

EDIT: Oh, I see. link

Cloudflare is doing it.Last modified on 2018-06-28 at 08:29

@13 That's odd as I'm not seeing that problem at all. Is it still doing it with the updated Cocoro@Connect name?

It isn't.

But anyway, you can turn the feature off, it seems:

If your website is protected by CloudFlare, you can turn the feature on by signing in to the dashboard then > ScrapeShield > Email Obfuscation.

This is awesome. Good work.

edit: considering there are content warnings, you might want to add some more of them. Bestiality for example is probably very relevant here.Last modified on 2018-06-28 at 11:54

@17 Thanks! I just added content warnings around an hour ago, so they aren't fully tagged yet. I'll look into adding a beastiality warning.

I think it'd be cool if this could be added to vndb's faq as a place to go for recommendations - since it uses curated vndb data and allLast modified on 2018-06-30 at 13:24

You know, I think you did a pretty good job at this recommender.

I looked at the VN sorter when it was posted, but refused to answer it because the games it presented were completely unknown to me -- my experience is with older games -- and I wouldn't be able to make any good judgements about them.

But now that I twiddled with the knobs to match my tastes, and am looking at the recommender's results, I see a whole bunch of familiar games.

(Also, I didn't realise so many games had been translated to English.)

How many datapoints did you get from the sorter? Do you know how many people responded? Does it only affect the newbie mode?

@20 Thanks! I'm glad you like the site~

We got a little over 20k votes on the newbie sorter. We didn't attach votes to users, so I don't know how many people that correlates with. The votes effect both the newbie mode and the popularity ranking. We're currently determining popularity by the number of times a VN was voted on (both as better or worse).

I'm currently just working on integrating the sorter onto the new main site, so it can list the new batches of VNs we plan to add each month and update the rankings on a regular basis.

Looks like platform and language aren't linked with releases in the search engine, which leads to some non-useful results; e.g. I chose Android and English and got Remember11 -The Age of Infinity-, which only has an Android version in Japanese.
#23 by bunnyadvocate
2018-06-30 at 17:36
@22 Ah yep, it's mostly just based on whether there was any release on that platform ever. We're trying to fix those errors, but with 363 VNs to check, it's slow going. I'll update remember 11 thanks!

might need some improvements but not bad. It popped a few titles that were on my list and did like. Had a few I have played before and didn't like either. But overall not a bad start if planning to expand on it
